The Artist
Gijs van Ouwerkerk (1976) is a photographer, visual artist and musician from the Drenthe region in The Netherlands, with a PhD in engineering.

The Instrument
The modular synthesizer is a freely configurable musical instrument and image generation device. It is The Voltage Painter’s blank canvas on which sounds and/or pictures are created by connecting patch cables carrying analog signals. The functional modules in the system are chosen and configured by the artist, according to his creative preferences. The instrument has no save function, so when the artist would like to use it for another performance, the current work is lost forever.
